Article 13 #CensorshipMachine will impose widespread censorship of all the content we share online. Art, fanfiction, parodies, remixes, mashups, memes, etc.. Anything that you do not hold the rights over will be taken down.

Article 13 would force all online platforms to police and prevent the uploading of copyrighted content, or make people seek the correct licenses to post that content. Internet platforms hosting large amounts of user-uploaded content must monitor user behaviour and filter their contributions to identify and prevent copyright infringement.

Such filters will be mandatory for platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Tumblr, Reddit and Instagram, but also much smaller websites.

This doesn’t just affect Europe. The content creators you love are going to be in hot water for sharing their art and writing with you online. Any and all content that doesn’t belong to us will be filtered. Even memes are at risk, as the person who took the original photo may want to file complaints against any platform that allows it to be used without permission. But it goes even further than that.

Last Tuesday (19th June 2018) a group of more than 70 people who have played important roles in building the internet and developing it (Tim Berners-Lee, Vincent Cerf, Jimmy Wales, Mitchell Baker…) into what it is today addressed an open letter to the members of the European Parliament:

“As creators ourselves, we share the concern that there should be a fair distribution of revenues from the online use of copyright works, that benefits creators, publishers, and platforms alike.

But Article 13 is not the right way to achieve this. By requiring Internet platforms to perform automatic filtering all of the content that their users upload, Article 13 takes an unprecedented step towards the transformation of the Internet from an open platform for sharing and innovation, into a tool for the automated surveillance and control of its users. […] The damage that this may do to the free and open Internet as we know it is hard to predict, but in our opinions could be substantial.”

I mean, lets say you walk into a store and the clerk tells you to go fuck yourself from the getgo, charges you twice the going price out of spite and generally acts like he’s got a +3 lance stuck up his arse. What would you do IRL? I reckon return the favor before walking out and going straight to his competitor. Merchants are people, DM’s. They have lives, families they wish to provide for, or just that desire to sell you something, because if they do (even at something tiny like say, a 10% markdown), you can go out and spread the word. “Hey, person I met in a tavern, you were looking for good armor, right? Well there’s this awesome shop down the street!” Boom, more business. You don’t have to go into their life story, but basic motivations and simply hopping into their shoes could make them more than angry robots.

The second is probably quite obvious, but as a player, if I’m just sitting at a table and occasionally tumbling a D20 because you told me I’m about to get my posterior nuked by 3 death rays, I’d love to at least know that my character was more than a pencil scribbled paper pinata for practicing sadism. I’m sure most players will agree that they have a character they’ve put a lot of time and effort into. A story they want to see happen, no matter how ridiculous, or perhaps a backstory they’d wish to haunt them on their adventure.

It doesn’t need to make them the big bad protagonist and lessen the group, but a bone here and there will go a very long way to making them feel like they’re a part of your world, as opposed to a glorified stat block named “Level 5 Wizard with x spells and an int saving throw of +6″. A character that feels awesome also doesn’t always have to be a super badass - intrigue, drama, a complex narrative. All of these could more than make up for what was previously a stat block that wasn’t dishing out enough hurt in a fight.

As a side note, don’t write people’s characters for them. Work with the player to weave them in - nobody cares about some surrogate you thought would be “lolhiilaaaaaaarius” to shove in someone’s face after murdering their creation. I saw that happen at a table, and the look on the player’s face was pretty disheartening. Maybe Tomb was the wrong campaign to start playing DnD on, poor timing I guess.

I’m going to agree with the points the video makes about narration. Some people believe that the DM should never narrate what the PCs do because it presumes how the PC might behave in any given situation. But honestly, pretty much everyone I’ve played with has enjoyed when I narrate because I’m painting a picture for them and making the scene more dramatic. It can be really immersive if done right!
(plus a player can always be like “I wouldn’t do it that way” and that’s fine. but when you really get to know your characters, that’s unlikely to happen!)

Oh my God this actually explains so much.

So there’s a known thing in the study of human psychology/sociology/what-have-you where men are known to, on average, rely entirely on their female romantic partner for emotional support. Bonding with other men is done at a more superficial level involving fun group activities and conversations about general subjects but rarely involves actually leaning on other men or being really honest about emotional problems. Men use alcohol to be able to lower their inhibitions enough to expose themselves emotionally to other men, but if you can’t get emotional support unless you’re drunk, you have a problem.

So men need to have a woman in their lives to have anyone they can share their emotional needs and vulnerabilities with. However, since women are not socialized to fear sharing these things, women’s friendships with other women are heavily based on emotional support. If you can’t lean on her when you’re weak, she’s not your friend. To women, what friendship is is someone who listens to all your problems and keeps you company.

So this disconnect men are suffering from is that they think that only a person who is having sex with you will share their emotions and expect support. That’s what a romantic partner does. But women think that’s what a friend does. So women do it for their romantic partners and their friends and expect a male friend to do it for them the same as a female friend would. This fools the male friend into thinking there must be something romantic there when there is not.

This here is an example of patriarchy hurting everyone. Women have a much healthier approach to emotional support – they don’t die when widowed at nearly the rate that widowers die and they don’t suffer emotionally from divorce nearly as much even though they suffer much more financially, and this is because women don’t put all their emotional needs on one person. Women have a support network of other women. But men are trained to never share their emotions except with their wife or girlfriend, because that isn’t manly. So when she dies or leaves them, they have no one to turn to to help with the grief, causing higher rates of death, depression, alcoholism and general awfulness upon losing a romantic partner.

So men suffer terribly from being trained in this way. But women suffer in that they can’t reach out to male friends for basic friendship. I am not sure any man can comprehend how heartbreaking it is to realize that a guy you thought was your friend was really just trying to get into your pants. Friendship is real. It’s emotional, it’s important to us. We lean on our friends. Knowing that your friend was secretly seething with resentment when you were opening up to him and sharing your problems because he felt like he shouldn’t have to do that kind of emotional work for anyone not having sex with him, and he felt used by you for that reason, is horrible. And the fact that men can’t share emotional needs with other men means that lots of men who can’t get a girlfriend end up turning into horrible misogynistic people who think the world owes them the love of a woman, like it’s a commodity… because no one will die without sex. Masturbation exists. But people will die or suffer deep emotional trauma from having no one they can lean on emotionally. And men who are suffering deep emotional trauma, and have been trained to channel their personal trauma into rage because they can’t share it, become mass shooters, or rapists, or simply horrible misogynists.

The only way to fix this is to teach boys it’s okay to love your friends. It’s okay to share your needs and your problems with your friends. It’s okay to lean on your friends, to hug your friends, to be weak with your friends. Only if this is okay for boys to do with their male friends can this problem be resolved… so men, this one’s on you. Women can’t fix this for you; you don’t listen to us about matters of what it means to be a man. Fix your own shit and teach your brothers and sons and friends that this is okay, or everyone suffers.

The next time a guy says, “What? You don't want to be my friend?” I’ll text him this and then ask if he really wants to be friends or just have another potential girlfriend.

Just wanted to pull that out so it didn’t get missed in the tl;dr world.

Ummm this has been the majority of the starts & ends of my male friendships. Men have been so mad when they realize I just want a friend, not someone to have sex with or bond any further than friends. I’ve lost male friends because of this & it’s sad & frustrating but it’s not me I’ve come to find.

Men basically don’t know, and are not taught, to appreciate friendship in this way. It’s shallow and unspoken if it’s with another man, and it’s sex-inclusive if it’s with a woman. No in-between.
